What is beauty insurance?

Beauty insurance is essential for protecting beauty practitioners from the risks that come with their everyday work when practicing treatments on customers.

Hamilton Fraser beauty insurance covers ensure protection for a different range of services, whether you work from a salon or visit clients at home.

What does our policy cover?

At Hamilton Fraser, we offer a range of covers tailored to your professional needs. You can choose the policy that works best for you.

Learn more about our indemnity malpractice, professional indemnity and public liability cover that we offer below.

Public liability

Public liability insurance covers you if a client or member of the public claims they have been injured, or that their property has been damaged because of your business activities. Public liability insurance covers the cost of any legal expenses or compensation you may be liable for, for example if a customer trips on an uneven surface on your premises or injures themselves on your equipment.

At Hamilton Fraser, we also include work away public liability cover up to £2m as standard in our indemnity policy as a free extension bolted onto the medical indemnity cover, providing you with public liability cover in a property you do not own or rent on an ad hoc basis.

If you own a premises, lease one, or have a rental agreement in place you require separate public liability.

Professional indemnity

Professional indemnity (PI) insurance is a commercial policy designed to protect business owners, freelancers and the self-employed if clients claim a service or advice you offer is inadequate. It protects you against legal costs in defending the allegation, and damages from any award or settlement.

Malpractice insurance

Malpractice insurance is designed to protect you against allegations of malpractice and negligence whilst administering aesthetic treatments. Without adequate cover, you will be left to defend any allegations personally, which could incur significant legal costs.

The Health and Care Act 2022 and licensing scheme for beauty practitioners

The new Health and Care Act 2022 grants the Government powers to introduce a licensing scheme for practitioners operating in England. This scheme aims to regulate and ensure the safety and quality of services provided by beauty practitioners.

The specifics of the licensing scheme are currently being determined, and the process involves a national consultation that began on September 2, 2023. Once implemented, the licensing scheme will likely require beauty practitioners to obtain a license demonstrating their competence and adherence to certain standards. This will help protect the public and ensure that practitioners are qualified and capable of providing safe and effective treatments.

It is important for beauty practitioners to stay informed about the progress of the licensing scheme and any requirements that may be imposed. Adhering to licensing requirements will likely become a crucial aspect of operating as a beauty practitioner in England once the scheme is established.

We're delighted that the Government approved Hair and Beauty Industry Authority (HABIA) have selected Hamilton Fraser Cosmetic Insurance as their recommended insurance provider.

Who do we insure?

Beauty therapists

Hamilton Fraser provides insurance cover for beauty therapists subject to a minimum qualification of NVQ Level 2 in general beauty or equivalent – for the provision of a wide range of treatments such as laser hair removal, most chemical peels, and general beauty treatments, as well as public liability and salon insurance for the whole industry. We don’t insure beauty therapists for injectable treatments.

Beauty salons

Whether you own or lease a premises, it is important to have the right cover in place to protect your assets. At Hamilton Fraser, we have tailored our salon and surgery insurance specifically to protect beauty salons, drugs and equipment against loss or damage caused by insured events such as storm, flood, escape of water and theft, as well as accidental damage.

Mobile beauty therapists

Hamilton Fraser also provides insurance for mobile beauty therapists, subject to a minimum qualification of NVQ Level 2 in general beauty or equivalent.

Working from home

Our comprehensive home insurance will keep you protected, even if you run your beauty salon from home. Running a cosmetic practice from your home without notifying your insurer can invalidate your cover. Securing a policy tailored to your workplace protects you from everyday business risks, as well as the unexpected.
