Hamilton Fraser, specialists in professional indemnity insurance for the aesthetic medicine industry, was shocked to hear the news that a Botox kit had been listed on global online auction site eBay.
An investigation carried out by Which? Computing found a pack containing Botox powder, needles and a face map being sold without a prescription. The pack was available for £62 but eBay withdrew the advert as soon as they were contacted by Which? Magazine.
Eddie Hooker, CEO of Hamilton Fraser, said:
“The listing of a DIY Botox Kit on eBay raises significant safety and legal issues. Botulinum toxin should be administered by a clinically trained professional and should certainly not be made available to anyone who has not had a consultation. If something was to go wrong the patient would be unable to pursue a claim for damages.

Sally Taber, Director of Independent Healthcare Advisory Services, who is at the forefront of establishing a self regulation regime for the use of Botulinum toxins and dermal fillers, commented:
“It is exceptionally dangerous for people to buy Botox kits and administer the treatment themselves. Botulinum toxin should only be administered by clinicians who have the appropriate qualifications to make a safe assessment of the suitability of the treatment. This includes registered dentists, doctors and adult registered nurses.”
